Beforehand, Kimathi Rawlings had lived quietly enough to not raise questions from Ghanaians but recent happenings may have changed that. If you do have questions, read further to get your answers.
Kimathi Rawlings is the last born and only son of Late President, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings.
Kimathi was born in the 1980s and named after a Kenyan freedom fighter Kimathi Waciuri. The freedom fighter who is loved and duly remembered by his country may have found a fan in Jerry John Rawlings which wouldn’t be a surprise.
The boy grew up with three big sisters; Amina Rawlings, Yaa Asantewaa Rawlings, and Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings.
He started his basic school education at the Morning Star School and North Ridge Lyceum both in Accra respectively.
Inconclusive at what age, Kimathi together with his sister, Amina left for the United Kingdom where he attended the Millfield School in England.
Having a passion for science and business, he enrolled in the Aston University of Birmingham and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in International Business.
You would think that being the only son of Jerry John Rawlings and an exact photocopy of the Ghanaian hero, Kimathi would follow in his father’s footsteps. Well, he didn’t.
The strong bloodlines of Kimathi’s mother, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings who not only has a love for politics but diligently supported her husband through his forts didn’t help either.
Probably knowing any of the sisters had a love for politics and would chase the dream didn’t deter him either.
Kimathi stayed back in London, secured a job, paved his path, and found a way to shine a light in any small corner in which he found himself.
The Ghanaian media only knows of one company where Kimathi had worked and still is, Eni Oil Gas Conglomerate.
In the company, the royal descendant of the Ashanti kingdom is a Commercial and Portfolio advisor.
His skills in analyzing, Risk management, upstream marketing, and Hydrocarbon accounting contributed fairly to Eni Oil and Gas ranking in the top 10 Companies in the sustainability score of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development globally.
LinkedIn, a social networking platform specially designed for business professionals, identifies Kimathi Rawlings as an over-the-decade experienced Commercial Advisor and Negotiator in the Oil and Gas Industry.
While Kimathi Rawlings was achieving his goals, his sisters were also making their parents proud.
Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings had carefully worked her way into becoming the parliamentary representative for the Klottey-Korle Constituency. The mother of three children prides herself in fighting for women’s and children’s rights.
Yaa Asantewaa who had also left for Ireland to study at the University of Dublin worked with her father as a Business Affairs Executive.
Channelling his energy from the sister closest to him by birth and geographically, Amina made the Bar and has been practising law for over a decade.
Kimathi Rawlings, although seeming withdrawn from the family, makes time to come home for family gatherings. He had shown his support when his mother took the feat of contesting in the presidential elections.
In the latter part of 2020, Kimathi Rawlings had to come back home and pay his last respects to his grandmother, Victoria Agbotui.
It got harder on the young man when fate pushed him to the front lines to perform the male child’s duties in burying his father, Jerry John Rawlings. Ghanaians may have taken the news of their hero hard but it must have been harder on his children.
At Jerry John Rawlings’ wake, Kimathi was seen showing support to the National Democratic Party as best as he could.
Generally, the handsome young man made sure he involved himself in things he usually wouldn’t do, just so his father, John, could have a befitting burial.
Despite soaking in the limelight for the very first time, Kimathi Rawlings took everything in stride.
Although Ghanaians are curious to know who Kimathi might be tied to romantically or in marriage, it seems we would never know. Kimathi might not come into the limelight again until he has to.
What we are sure of is, Kimathi Rawlings has an uncle named Mr Isaac Newton Nii Lante Addy from his father’s side.
From his mother’s side, Kimathi has a royal aunt by the name Nana Yaa Agyemang.
Being the man of the house now, Ghanaians hope that while avoiding the limelight, Kimathi would make his father proud by coming through for his mother and sisters when need be.
