Reports suggested that the Gunners’ midfielder had been sacked by Ghana but instead was granted permission to miss upcoming international friendlies.

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey was not sacked from international duty, but was instead granted permission to be excused for rest.

There were reports circling from Ghanaian media on Monday morning that the 27-year-old had been sent away from international duty for disciplinary reasons.

However, football.london understands that is not the case, with the Gunners midfielder instead being granted permission to sit out and thus miss international friendlies against Morocco and the Ivory Coast.

Sources have confirmed that Partey asked for permission to be excused, that request being granted by Ghana boss Charles Akonnor.

Instead, the player who was actually sacked was reportedly former Reading graduate and current Brentford man Tariq Fosu.

A statement on both player’s current situation with the national team is expected from the Ghana Football Association shortly.

Partey’s absence from international duty is another chapter in what has been a frustrating season following his big-money move from Atletico Madrid last summer.

Due to a combination of injuries, the midfielder only managed to make 36 appearances in all competitions under Mikel Arteta, just 26 of those being starts.

Despite that, his former Atletico Madrid teammate Saul Niguez, who has recently been linked with a move to Chelsea, has been hailing his potential influence going forwards for the Gunners.

Speaking in April, the Spaniard said: “I think having a coach like Mikel Arteta at Arsenal eased things a lot for him. He knows the language and it is a culture that suits him.

“As a player he’s incredible and if he manages to keep this consistency, he can be one of the best in the world honestly.

“I have known him since we were 16 or 17 years old and I’ve always felt that he was going to be a very important player, but what he has lacked is the consistency, because he’s capable of doing everything.

“He scores from out of the box, he makes ground, steals, distributes, runs the game himself. But if he ever reads this I would like to mention again that he should improve his consistency.

“It’s not enough just doing one good game and then not appearing in three or four. He has to be more intelligent in that aspect and know what he has to do those days in which he’s not performing as well.
