West Ham locked player in boot of car to avoid transfer being leaked to media

Modern-day football stars are used to travelling in style and have become accustomed to a life of yachts, private jets and supercars.

But surprisingly that’s not always the case, as Demba Ba revealed he once had to hide in the boot of a car to force through a dream move to the Premier League.

The Senegalese hitman came to the attention of Premier League clubs during a hugely successful three and a half year stint at Ralf Ragnick’s Hoffenheim, where his goals propelled them from Bundesliga 2 to a top half Bundesliga team.

In January 2011, Ba felt Hoffenheim had gone back on their word to sell him so he fled to England without his clubs permission to pursue a move.

But it turns out that was just the start of Ba’s undisclosed travel arrangements.

With West Ham in the midst of a relegation battle, they persuaded Ba to go to unusual lengths to keep his arrival a secret.

“It wasn’t the biggest boot. It was like ‘boom, boom’, I’m hitting my head at every corner.”

Sadly it wasn’t enough to keep the Hammers up: “It was a good dressing room but ultimately we didn’t have the necessary quality,” added Ba.

However, Ba remained in the Premier League until 2014, with successful spells at Newcastle and Chelsea.

Moneybags Newcastle United have been rumoured to be chasing the signature of Ba’s former boss and mentor Ragnick.

Ba, who has recently retired after an illustrious sixteen year career, would one day love to emulate Ragnick and become a sporting director.

“I shadow him, learning how he operates,” Ba said.
